DeBarge has always been a much better musician than vocalist. His music is good, but it never sounds like he's really giving it his all -- he's not giving a damn. It's a pity, because his vocal talents could be so good, and they're wasted on these soulless, forgettable songs.
DeBarge's greatest talents are on display in his earlier recordings. In these, his love of R&B and smooth soul was given the full range of his musical talents. While Long Time No See is not the first time DeBarge has tackled R&B and hip-hop, this is the first time he's done a record that takes advantage of his skills in those areas. Yet, like Chico himself, Long Time No See falls flat. Unfortunately, the reverse has been true for both Chico and Long Time No See, with the former's comeback album selling only marginally better than the latter's. This is a shame, as Long Time No See was long overdue.
So you've got Chico DeBarge back with a solid comeback album, and it's nice to see him enjoying his now-adult life again. But it doesn't necessarily mean that he'll be able to continue making great music. Long Time No See is slightly weaker than his previous album, anyway, and it's a major step down for a once-great artist. But what we hear here is still good enough to keep DeBarge's name in the public eye for a while.
