Initially light rings around a black body will be observed on the aperture stop. However, when a higher-intensity collimated light source is used, a single bright ring at the centre of the stop can be seen. Ring-enhanced noctilucent clouds (RENCs) were observed over the southern hemisphere on 7 February 1994 and February 1995. It was uncertain whether the characteristic rings are a common feature of these clouds or whether they only appear as a result of the particular cloud geometry during the observations being analysed. The standard radiometer was used to observe RENCs over an upright airmass over the stations of Mauna Loa, Hawaii, Flagstaff, Arizona, and Alert, Nunavut, to determine if RENC characteristics were unique to the airmass under study or applicable to all events. The radiometer data were processed to produce vertical reflectance distributions, and ratios of this distribution to the standard distribution recorded over Queensland. Two strong RENCs were observed over western Australia on 14 April 1994. One of these has been studied previously, but the data correlated in the current study are of comparable quality and so allow us to derive a more precise determination of the cloud's top temperature.

Bolometers are radiation sensors designed to have a spectral response as constant as possible in the region of interest. In high-temperature plasmas, the main radiation output is in the ultraviolet and SXR part of the spectrum and the metal foil bolometers are special detectors developed for this interval. For such sensors, as in general for all bolometers, the absolute calibration is a crucial issue. This problem becomes particularly severe when, like in nuclear fusion, the sensors are not easily accessible. In this article, a detailed description of the in situ calibration methods for the bolometer sensitivity S and the cooling time constant c, the two essential parameters characterizing the behavior of the sensor, is provided and an estimate of the uncertainties for both constants is presented. The sensitivity S is determined via an electrical calibration, in which the effect of the cables connecting the bolometers to the powering circuitry is taken into account leading to an effective estimate for S. Experimental measurements confirming the quality of the adopted coaxial cable modelling are reported.
