Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of hepatocellular carcinoma. This study was to analyze the expression of VEGF and its receptors (VEGFR-1 and VEGFR-2) in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) and to evaluate its clinical significance. Thirty surgical specimens of ICC and 30 specimens of peritumoral tissue adjacent to tumor were analyzed. The expression of VEGF, VEGFR-1, and VEGFR-2 was detected by immunohistochemistry. The association between VEGF expression and pathological parameters was analyzed. The expression of VEGF was detected in ICC but not in normal peritumoral liver tissue. VEGFR-2 was expressed in ICC but not in peritumoral tissue. There was no significant correlation between VEGF and VEGFR-1 expression in ICC. Patients with lymph node metastasis showed higher expression of VEGF in ICC than those without lymph node metastasis. There was a significant difference in the expression of VEGF between well differentiated and poor differentiated ICC. The expression of VEGF in ICC was significantly related to serum alpha-fetoprotein and histological differentiation. High VEGF expression in ICC indicates malignancy and may serve as a potential therapeutic target for ICC.Sanyak (1990 film)
