I am extremely grateful to the author(s) for producing such a comprehensive book and I highly recommend it to anyone who wishes to improve their knowledge of the anatomy, physiology and the diseases of the head and neck.
This is the first book that I have found that has its own labelling sequence which is a complete surprise to me for I was totally used to flipping through the book and seeing the labelling laid out in a fixed sequence. The information is very clear with the labelling, for example page 69 is the labelling of nerves on the tongue starting with the glossopharyngeal and vagus. There is also in-depth detail on the anatomy and physiology of myofascial pain and migraine. The book goes into the biochemistry of the skin and the significant role in this of the lymphatic system. It explains the differences between varicose veins and spider angioma. This book explains where the head and neck are accessible for blood sampling. It explains the differences between a blood test and a biopsy and how the latter is performed. It includes an excellent chapter on the clinical relevance of the evaluation of the lymphatics. It explains the anatomy of the normal lymphatics and those affected by cancer. The book explains how peri-operative therapy can affect lymph transport and this is a topic that I thought was covered in the very old 'Binder's Text Book of Head and Neck Surgery'. The book clearly explains the lymphatic drainage and the associated lymph nodes, and the late veins are shown in relation to these lymph nodes. The book has great narrative detail and the anatomy is presented in a clear and logical manner. The book is very well illustrated with good photographs of the lymphatic anatomy and examples of lymphatic pathology. There are several colour photographs of lymphatic vessels in the neck and a number of well selected line drawings. The book has a refreshingly comprehensive review of the pharmacology of the myofascial pain syndromes and of migraine. I was impressed with the depth and detail given to each subject. The book concludes with a chapter on cancer and this is the only chapter that is not illustrated. The chapter is well laid out and very well written. It has the added advantage of giving a list of the text books that are appropriate to each topic and it also gives the specific page for reference on the Internet.
