Over the years, humans have adopted various methods of hairless animal protection. Some have become so bad at the job that they have to use muzzles to keep their hands and mouths away from their pelt. Others go all out and have plastic guards or probes on their heads to cover their heads.
But in humans, the lack of human-like hair patterns may be a result of the way the human and ape ancestors lived, Pagel said. Most of the time, our ancestors spent a lot of time in trees or other elevated terrain. But when the ancestors of modern humans left Africa, they started to spend most of their time in the open, exposing their heads to the sun.
Our ancestors were also evolving in a new environment, Pagel said. With less forest and more grassland, they were exposed to more sunlight. They needed to be able to protect themselves from that.
The first idea is that hairless heads may have given humans better hearing. If a light stream hitting the side of the head was too loud, it could damage the ear, and hairless heads would have an advantage in this situation. Pagel said that this may have been the case for people living near large bodies of water, such as swimming and fishing. The second reason involves the lower body temperature of the hairless ape, Pagel said. Humans in colder environments evolved to have long hair, and if an ape had a long, protective hair coat, it could be a disadvantage during colder months. A third reason has to do with the distribution of hair and the amount of perspiration, Pagel said. The perspiration would help cool the ape's body by evaporation, but it would also dry the skin. Severely drying the skin could cause excessive skin problems. There are cases of skin cancer in humans that have those problems, Pagel said.
When it comes to humans and head hair, most of us are born with some hair and then lose it through age, Pagel said. But there are a few genetic diseases that cause loss of hair, Pagel said. One of the most common is the lack of a hair follicle.
Over the years, Tootie Ramsey moved to Florida, while Jo Polniaczek went to work for the Sesame Street Workshop. Natalie Green remains living in Peekskill, marrying and divorcing twice, and now has a grown daughter.
As a friend of the shop, I've often been asked if I'd like to buy it. I'm not saying I wouldn't, but my answer is always the same: it'd be like asking my brother if I could buy my father's apron, or my mother's hat. It's part of the family. It's part of my history, and that's part of our history together. There's nothing I'd love more than to try and keep the Peekskill, New York Pop Culture Nostalgia Museum alive as a tribute to a unique part of a unique little town's history.
