In a limited sense, the two men found common ground in their unshakable belief that the organization of the art they had created served the public by demystifying the sensational nature of many martial arts films and helping to encourage an open and mature dialogue about the subject. Accordingly, The Black Science: Ancient and Modern Techniques of Ninja Mind was launched in January 2012 by Zen Publications and is the first-ever book to bring together the teachings of two men in history who made their mark upon the martial arts world and whose respective paths would eventually converge within the school of To-Shin Do.
Though not without its detractors, Hayes' legacy has endured. Perhaps the most compelling evidence of this is preserved on The Way of the Warrior. According to author and martial arts historian Chris Crudelli, to this day, every person he's encountered who was the child of an upper-class martial arts enthusiast finds an entirely new appreciation for the art when presented with the teachings of Hayes and Hatsumi. While this is true of many teachers whose teachings became intertwined with the individuals and families of the men studied here, other heads of To-Shin Do schools have credited Hayes and Hatsumi with serving as influential role models. Hayes himself stated that he viewed Hatsumi as a spiritual and possibly practical guide in his life.
I believe that Hayes and Hatsumi played a mutually beneficial role in their respective careers and that their influence on the martial arts world is significant: To-Shin Do as a martial art had been publicly taught for a few hundred years before either man's lives. Although Hatsumi had a much more public profile due to his participation in a television show, Hayes' influence cannot be underestimated.
Our modern world is on a precipitous decline. An article in the July 23rd issue of The Christian Science Monitor is consistent in pointing out the alarming increase in violent crime across the United States. According to the report, the number of murders per 100,000 people jumped by 13% between 2007 and 2008. d2c66b5586
