While there's an emphasis on the extreme of the sport, Amped 3 has a good bit of friendly fun as well. When not riding powder at the highest speeds, you'll find yourself skiing in the mountains and slaloming through forests, climbing over boulders and hopping through cliffs. It's a full-fledged ski/snowboard racer with just enough friendly bloodsport to make it interesting. This is not your typical, car racing, street racing, BMX racing, cop-chasing, or whatever else you might find on the shelf these days. It's a light, family-friendly racing game with a good bit of personality.
Of course, getting up close and personal with the action isn't the only thing that Amped 3 offers. We got to sit in on a presentation of the game to a packed house of gamers, and while the demo was brief, we got a good look at some of the more interesting aspects of the game. Our first demo showed off a quick-time event (QTE) mechanic. You can perform various stunts or actions--like flipping turns, kicking in the air, and bailing out--with either a timed button press or a simple, easy-to-use QTE. As a demo, it's not all that useful--you can't jump in midair, and the new spins are limited. But it's a nice addition to the game to show how far the developers have come since the first look. It's a very simple and effective implementation of a QTE mechanic, which is more common in videogames than you might think.
The game is currently scheduled to hit stores on November 9, 2005, but the first print will be available on October 7 for $59.99. But don't worry--this game isn't short on volume. You'll be able to buy Amped 3 for eight different platforms: PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox, GameCube, Game Boy Advance, GameCube, Nintendo DS, and PC.
The show began with some interviews with the cast and crew. Claire Keim talked about the cast's favorite characters and how they fit into their lives, and her character. She said that she enjoys playing with each character's relationship with her own mother, and that her character helps her with her own. He also wanted them to know their partners and their family back home. He said, that the job was hard, but it was also enjoyable because they knew they were helping to educate people. Mainly, the cast and crew talked about how Loved Ones gets such amazing stories from the cast and crew. They told us how they enjoyed playing the characters.
