15 3.2 Terminology The definition of the following terms applies in this Specification unless the context otherwise requires: Precast element Precast panel Precast panel element Precast slab Precast slab element Precast in situ panel Precast in situ panel element Precast in situ slab Precast in situ slab element Formwork Performance Given in this Specification shall not be interpreted as implying that all formworks will equally perform in respect of their design attributes. Cracker cracking The act or process of cracking a concrete slab by means of a crack which runs from the edge to the centre of the slab. Cracking of a concrete slab shall normally be prevented by the use of sufficient weight of formwork, usually a precast panel, a precast slab or a precast in situ slab element. Cracking of a concrete slab due to excessive pore water pressure or due to improper hydration of the silica-based cement. Crack depth A crack depth shall be measured in accordance with BS EN 13670: 2009, the definition of which applies for the purpose of this Specification, as a horizontal crack across the face of a concrete element being tested. Crack length A crack length shall be measured in accordance with BS EN 13670: 2009, the definition of which applies for the purpose of this Specification, as the horizontal distance across the face of a concrete element being tested. Cracking A crack shall be considered to be present in a concrete element when it is apparent to the naked eye, or when in accordance with BS EN 13670: 2009, a crack length of 1.5 mm has occurred. Cubic metre Crack length measurement shall be taken at the point of the crack, where the crack length is one-tenth of the slab thickness. Cracking of a concrete slab due to the presence of gas or due to an internal or external restraint. Duct concrete Duct concrete is concrete mixed in a mixer and poured as a single piece of concrete in a mould. Duct concrete is suitable for structural members or formwork. Dry machined surface Dry machined surface shall be defined as a surface which has not been water-jetted or sanded. It will not be required to show the surface finish as in the case of a wet machined surface. 3 827ec27edc
